Sweet Buttery Onions
Sweet, buttery onions! Learn how to grill onions like these, along with other grilled onion recipes. Dishes like pearl onion skewers and grilled sliced onions are gotta-have bbq side dishes for your cookout.
Cooked on the grill, onions will take on some carmelization as they soften and become sweeter. The pungent aroma disappears, leaving you with sweet, melt in your mouth goodness! I guess you can tell I love grilled onions, huh?
Grills for Onions
Onions can be grilled indoors or out. I often use one of my kitchen countertop grills to cook slices of large white and red onions. And sometimes I heat up my cast iron grill pan and cook ’em on top of the stove. When I’m grilling outdoors, I usually toss in a few seasoned, buttered whole onions or grill a few onion slices.
Grilling Whole Onions
How to Grill Onions in Foil
Wrapping whole onions in foil helps them cook quicker and remain moist. Peel off the dry skin and trim off any partially dried areas. Add some butter or oil and some seasonings, seal the foil around the onion and grill for about an hour with indirect heat. Give the onions a squeeze to know when they’re done.

Buttery Beefy Onions
One of my favorite grilled onion recipes is buttery beefy onions. Remove the skin, cut off the tops. Then fill them with butter and beef bouillon before wrapping in foil and grilling. This is one rich tasting side dish! If you use a rotisserie, try grilling a pan of whole onions under the spinning meat. The juices drip all over the onions, giving them unbeatable flavor.
Pearl onions, shallots, and even cloves of garlic grill nicely on metal skewers. Remove the dry skin, trim the root end clean and thread onto skewers. Brush on a generous amount of oil and grill over direct, medium low heat. Grill until soft (15 to 30 minutes), turning occasionally to prevent burning.
Grilling Green Onions
The tops of green onions, spring onions and scallions cook quicker than the root ends, so when grilling, position the white part over direct heat and the tops over an unlit burner. That way both ends will cook perfectly. Rub with oil and season before grilling. Grilled green onions take just a few minutes to cook.
Grilling Onion Slices
Slices grill nicely on electric countertop grills and stovetop grills. When using open grills, slice the onion into 1/4 inch thick slices. You can cut them thicker if using a closed grill, since both the top and bottom are cooked at the same time. Brush with oil and season, then grill until done.
Onion Grilling Tips
- Brush with oil or melted butter before grilling to improve flavor, promote browning and prevent drying.
- Separate small onions slightly when on skewers, and they’ll cook faster.
- Use metal skewers. As the skewer gets hot, it cooks the onions from the inside out.
- Wrapping onions in foil speeds up cooking time and gives you a moister onion.
- Run a pair of skewers through onion slices to prevent the layers from separating.
- Use direct heat for thin slices and small whole onions, indirect heat for thick slices or whole onions.
- Grilling onions until soft tames the pungent flavor and maximizes sweetness.
